Island Beer Club History
On a standard sunny March day in 2004 the Island Beer Club (IBC) was founded. Jeff Bones”
Wilkens, John “Cruncher” Muncy, Wayne “Big Oly” Oldendorph and John “Old Doc” Morton decided
to sample the beer of a number of local micro-breweries in the San Diego, California area.
After a number of thirst-quenching stops, the group ended up at Ballast Point Brewing
Company near the USD campus. It was there that a kegerator on display for sale caught our
interest. The thought emerged…Wouldn’t it be cool if we could enjoy a cold, hand-crafted,
micro-brewed beer without the hassle of traveling to a bar. Since great ideas require
intense thought and discussion, we adjourned to the VFW in Coronado for further liquid
refreshment. At the “V” we agreed to form the organization. Bones would be the “capital”
man, purchase a kegerator and allow his garage to be used for microbrew beer sampling
sessions. Other Island Beer Club members would purchase kegs of beer as required. We then
adjourned to the Little Club to celebrate our brilliant thoughts and begin our membership
campaign.
Being men of action, several days later the kegerator was purchased, the first keg delivered
(Ballast Point Pale Ale) and on Monday, 22 March 2004, the IBC held it’s first meeting for
Coronado’s beer aficionados. Meeting at 4:00 PM, we grew fond of watching Jerry Springer
(not much else on the tube at that time) and discussing happenings in the universe. It was
here we developed our motto: “More Time than Money” to reflect the retired status of most of
our members. We also developed our membership requirement: You buy a keg and you are a
member. Our project for 2005 was to install a urinal, since every Beer Club needs one.
Two years later the IBC now has two kegerators. As part of our community outreach program,
one of the kegerators can be loaned out to the community for neighbors and friends in need
of serving keg beer in the San Diego area. You provide the beer, we provide the kegerator
and the IBC gets any leftovers.
The IBC now meets every Wednesday at 4:00 PM in the alley at 851 J Ave in Coronado and has
almost 20 members.
